In:between

2021 - ongoing / Material: Eurasian watermilfoil

in:between is a material research and design project about and with an invasive aquatic plant, the Eurasian watermilfoil. Human activities, such as over-fertilisation, and global lifestyles favour the spread of the aquat- ic plant. The invasiveness affects the water ecosystem and immensely reduces local biodiversity. In:between investigates the ecosocial and design potentials to discover hidden added values of the Eurasian water- milfoil.
To date, the invasive aquatic plant species are getting removed from water systems to be composted or stored. This process is often quite ex- pensive. In:between extends and intensifies the plant’s lifespan by add- ing a new usage beyond landfill and composting: The removed aquatic plants are transformed into practical objects and, thus, used in new areas. The products are 100% compostable, as they do not contain any glue or other additional materials.
